This inspection involves a recorded scoping video and/or camera inspection of the lateral sewer main line from the home to the private or public sewage system. The condition and routing of the sewer line, and location of the private system (septic tank or cesspool) are part of this inspection. Additionally, the condition (fullness) of the septic tank or cesspool are determined during this process. Deficiencies (damaged and/or aged piping), blockages, etc.in sewer lines can be very costly. Be mindful that you are not only purchasing the property, but the sewer line/piping as well…and private systems are very common here on the Big Island. The location of the septic tank or cesspool is often unknown, especially on homes built before 1998. This inspection is VERY important as the pumping of septic tanks is commonly necessary and potentially costly ($600.00-$1,000.00+), so you don’t want to get stuck with this problem and expense after your purchase.
Plumbers typically charge $500-$700 for this inspection.
